Pancake Rocks & Hokitika Gorge

We continued our trip south along the west coast. We stopped again in Westport for ice and food, then we drove to Paparoa National Park.
We did a short walk on the Truman Track and then went to the pancake rocks at Punakaiki. It was the first time on the trip where we encountered a lot of other tourists and it was a bit more crowded than we like.

We had a car picnic of leftovers and then decided to set up camp for the night. The weather is grey and cloudy so we did all our laundry and cleaned the tent out. Before dinner we went on a short walk along the Pokakai River Track. We encountered a goat on the trail- strange!

I have almost recovered from the cold. Rosie has not had it yet so we hope she won't get it. We are both still covered in sandfly bites.

The next day we continued south again to Hokitika. We stopped for supplies in Greymouth where we felt spoilt for choice with shops and petrol stations even though it was early on a Sunday morning. In Hokitika we tried to arrange a bike ride on the west coast wilderness trail for tomorrow but the bike rental place is closed on Sundays. We went to the gloworm Dell but couldn't see anything...because it was daylight!!....It is about 1km from our hostel so perhaps we can go back tonight. We drove out to Hokitika Gorge and did a walk and had lunch. It was the first time we have seen the blue coloured glacial rock flour water in NZ. We had lunch as a car picnic again, along with the usual swarm of sandfly friends.

Back in Hokitika we went to our hostel. We were the only ones there so we had a good explore and hung the tent out to dry outside. The hostel is really nice and we have our own room. Ros claimed the big bed in the room, and I have the bunks.

Nice hostel kitchen
